What a beautiful day out today! As such, we decided to take our homeschooling on the road today – I have decided to now dub it “Field Trip Tuesdays” – partially because of the weather, but mainly so we can give dad well needed quiet time while he’s working from home.
Today’s Learn Day was to Lake Opeka in Des Plaines, IL.
Our day started with a nice walk around the lake before beginning our studies. After our walk the kids worked on their reading/phonics. My son continued with his reading comprehension of Chapter 2 in his assigned book “Wish” while my daughter practiced writing and words beginning with the letters A-D.
We continued with our math segment which revisited place values and began division concepts for Romanko and counting/writing up to double digits for Clarita.
As part of our science segment today, the kiddos had a great time digging up and reading about fossils/gemstones. It was a huge joy to see the excitement on their faces to find the various pieces in the National Geographic Dig Kit. Romanko’s favorite gemstone was the Green Aventurine – luck and good fortune. Clarita’s favorite gemstone was the Rose Quartz – the love magnet.
Finally, we sat by the tree and began reading a chapter from our family reading time book, “The Family Fletcher Takes Rock Island” by Dana Alison Levy. So far good!
As we were finishing up our field trip homeschool day right before lunchtime, it started to get quite hot and humid so it was a perfect end to our day!
